Hisashi Iwakuma surpassed 162 innings last week, meaning he crossed the minimum innings threshold for his 2017 club option to vest at $14 million.
However, Iwakuma's contract also stipulates that he must finish the season without incurring a specific injury. While it seems likely the option will vest, his 2017 salary isn't yet guaranteed.
Iwakuma signed a one-year, $12 million deal with the Seattle Mariners (including a pair of vesting options) after a three-year, $45 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers broke down over health concerns.
The Boston Red Sox may now be likely to pick up the $13.5 million option on Clay Buchholz's contract for the 2017 season.
Buchholz was moved to the bullpen, then he returned to the rotation with three very good emergency starts. Now he's set for a bigger role in the late innings for the Red Sox.
The 32-year-old has started 16 of his 30 appearances over 108.2 innings this season.
Buchholz has a 5.63 ERA as a starter and a 3.05 mark as a reliever.
The Baltimore Orioles have signed Tommy Hunter, bringing him back for a sixth straight season.
Hunter was 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 21 games for Cleveland this season. He was in the minors rehabbing a recent back injury when the Indians cut him on Thursday.
Hunter played for Baltimore from 2011-15, going 21-20 with a 4.22 ERA. He said he was thrilled to rejoin the Orioles, adding there were "a lot of smiles, a lot of hugs" when he walked into the clubhouse.
The San Diego Padres have interest in re-signing John Jay this offseason.
"It feels great," Jay, asked his reaction, said Friday. "I love San Diego, I love what's going on, I love where the team's headed. Obviously, with free agency, you wait so long to get to this point as a player, you want to see what's out there. But at the same time, I feel very comfortable here. I do like it a lot here, so this is definitely something my wife and I will discuss when we're making those decisions."
"He's a tremendous leader, and he's still a great player," Padres manager Andy Green said. "I'm hopeful he wants to be back, and I'm hopeful we come to some sort of terms where he comes back, but that's an offseason discussion at this point in time. I think all parties involved are pretty open to it."
Jay performed effectively when he was on the field this season. At the time of his injury, he was leading the team in batting average and the National League in doubles.
The Toronto Blue Jays have designated Aaron Loup for assignment to recall Bo Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo.
Loup gave up three earned runs on Friday.
"It’s out of necessity," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "Got a little beat up out there."
The Jays would like to keep Loup.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have scheduled Shelby Miller for at least one more Triple-A start which will leave him unable to accrue enough days on the active roster this year to reach four full years of Major League service.
Miller would need to return to the Major League roster by Thursday to reach 172 days and move from the 3+ to the 4+ arbitration class. He had been on track to qualify for free agency after the 2018 season, but now it seems the Diamondbacks will control him for 2019 as well.
The Los Angeles Dodgers will try to keep Justin Turner this offseason.
Turner is expected to be one of the better free agent options this winter and has done nearly everything in his tenure with the Dodgers.
He is hitting .277/.342/.515 with a career-high 24 home runs this season.
Yoenis Cespedes says that he still intends to stay for the final two years of his contract with the New York Mets.
The Mets traded for Cespedes last summer and then he re-signed on a three-year, $75 million deal with a clause allowing him to walk away after this season.
Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard have both cleared revocable waivers and can now be traded without restriction.
Only one week remains for players to be dealt while remaining eligible for the postseason rosters of their new clubs.
